Actually we can take this story and get something out of it a lot of people don't realize. When Swiss males are relieved of their mandatory service they are allowed to keep their government-issued assault rifles. The only thing is that the selective-fire is taken off so you can only shoot in single shot rounds. Switzerland has one of the highest per-capita gun ownership rates in the world yet their annual number of murders is usually in the single digits. Other crime involving guns is also extremely, extremely low.

That's amazing. Perhaps Heinlein's gun-toting peaceful future isn't so far off after all.

Then I shouldn't be reading false claims as to the philosophical underpinnings of our Constitution.

And yet you do, and comment on it anyway. They have programs for compulsion, y'know. Wink

My above post is in reference to the ludicrous idea that this administration (or any, for that matter), actually does what its people want.

The banks should have been allowed to fail, we should have gone into a depression, and the greedy rich people of the private sector would have come to save the day.

Instead we have the public sector thinking it knows what's best, taking control of the private sector, and not just owning it, but being very VERY hands on about how it should be run. Your boy Carl Marx thought his idea was the best, but it's only the best when Adonai is allowed to be the head. So, in the mean time, Adam Smith came up with the best idea, it's the law of nature, the strong will survive, and the market will dictate who the strong is. The banks were weak, they deserved to die. You talk about socialism as if it's this great idea. Name me one country that operates as Marx wanted, that is better off than it was before it became socialist. Just one. Cuba's in shambles, so is Russia, and Venezuela and many South American countries are following suit.

Feel better?

Mav - do you know at all about actual Marxism? You inter-change the words Marxism, socialism, and communism as if they are all the same ideas. Communism as its colloquial meaning has come to be is very far from what Marx was actually writing about. Russia, Cuba, China, etc. were not at all Marxist states. Countries in Scandinavia are much more in tune with Marxist doctrine than these cults of personality that we've seen with the countries you've listed. And by the way, they're doing very well.

If the private market always supplies the best, most efficient services then explain to me why Sweden spends half of what we spend per capita on health care yet has lower infant mortality rates, longer average lifespan, AND lower waiting times in the ER or to see a specialist. Crazy right? They can spend HALF of what we do and get a better outcome through government-controlled services. How is that?

EDIT - by the way can you tell me which socialist South American country continues to have a growing economy in this world recession?

It's definitely not Venezuela. Collapsing oil prices have ruined their single-suited economy. Chavez is a fool and the "socialism" he's pushing is nothing but bread and circuses to keep the masses in check while he consolidates power. Panem et circenses, classic authoritarian rule.

Ok, I give. (I'm not up on my S. American current events.) I've always thought it might be fun to spend some time in Argentina.

Care to back that up with actual facts? Dude, I do this shit for a living. You clearly know nothing about anything Marx was writing. Have you ever bothered to read anything he's written? I mean shit in another thread you tried to argue that "communism" is a type of governmental structure rather than centralized ownership of all means of production (which is what it actually is). Having a communist state says nothing about what type of governmental system you have. You can have a communist democracy if you really wanted to. FYI, China has an authoritarian single-party government. I don't think you actually know much about what you're trying to talk about.

If you think that these socialist Scandinavian countries are not doing well then why does Norway have one of the biggest social nets in the world yet has the highest per capita percentage of millionaires of any country in the world. Why is this? Doesn't increased social spending mean that people get lazy and don't work hard?

By the way, why is it that the only time in the past 50 years that the federal bureaucracy has decreased was under the Clinton administration? It seems that every time we follow conservative doctrine more people end up on welfare and more people are needed in the public sector. [/i]
