Best Music Download Site? (legal only)
|
|
|
I would like to download some songs legally, as in paying for them, and would like your opinion on which service you have used. Please include those you liked and disliked.
I know this is not a poll you vote on, this is more of an objective poll.
Thank you for your input on this!

You know Tom Hanks, Forrest Gump. Slow, yes. Retarded, maybe. Braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants off Nixon and he won a ping-pong competition? That ain’t retarded.
You went full retard, man. Never go full retard. |

I've used Apple's itunes a few times. I used it mostly for free stuff I won via pepsi's promotion but I've also purchased a few from them. I can't complain about it at $1 a song it fits my needs perfectly. The other services where you subscribe seems like a good deal but you never own the "unlimited" music you download. When the subscription ends, all of your music no longer plays. With Apple's current system you own the music. Apple's drm is also the most lenient from what I've been told with being able to play the music on up to 5 computers with the itunes player which is a pretty nice player. The smartlist feature is incredibly handy.
I'm not a huge music person but like to have music around when I feel like listening. I'm sure there are more serious listeners around here who might have differing opinions on this sorta thing. Many that I associate with still prefer to buy cd's and rip them so they get the quality they want. Apple's setup makes it very convenient and the quality is good enough for me though. |

Yeah, a full CD is gonna cost you $15-$20 if you pay by song. You'd probably be better off getting a pay service as was mentioned before.

I think I want to try Itunes, do you know if the format will work on any player? I have the Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra.

I'm fairly certain they send you the songs in .mp3 format, but if not I can get you a file converter for it.

Ok one of you could have told me that purchased music comes in some god forsaken M4P format that does not allow it to be converted! So, my bothers and sisters, I need some help here. I need to convert it so that my mp3 player will download and play it.
Side note, windows media player will not play it and neither will winamp, only quicktime!

there's a way around that.
burn with iTunes, then rip it with something else. |

i meant burn to .cda with itunes, then rip it with, say, winamp or mmjb to .mp3 format.
i know this can be done, though i don't bother to do it often, having an ipod and an itunes account. but i have burned an occasional cd from itunes for my wife to listen to in the car.
fwiw, i prefer itunes. it may just be me, but i always thought the drm for itunes was less _1984_ than the other choices. |

A simple "MP4 to MP3" search on Google brought me across multiple converters. You shouldn't have a problem, there.
